Luise Rainer
1910—
Actor. Luise Rainer became an actress at the age of sixteen in defiance of her parents’ wishes, acted in Max Reinhardt’s company in Vienna, went to Hollywood, won two Oscars in a row, and married Clifford Odets, the hugely successful left-wing playwright (Waiting for Lefty, Awake and Sing, Golden Boy, The Country Girl) and screenwriter (Sweet Smell of Success). She withdrew from movies, having crossed Louis B. Mayer, and barely acted again—the odd play and a happy life with a new (publisher) husband in New York and London. Yes, she told me, she had regrets, but she gave no sign of bitterness: ‘Never look back.’ She was extraordinarily lively—bird-like, bright, funny, a Pierrot face, with the large, deep eyes of a marmoset. And still beautiful, wonderful cheekbones, and when she turned away from the camera as she spoke, the light perfectly sculpted a shape unchanged since her Hollywood days. She still had a strong Viennese accent rolling her r’s as she spoke of Brecht: ‘Hoorrrible.’ I interviewed her in her eighty-ninth year in an airy flat in Eaton Square—in a house, as the blue plaque told me, where Vivien Leigh once lived. Before I left she showed me a photograph of a man with frizzy grey hair and a large moustache, white beach trousers rolled up to the knees and a smile of pure contentment on his face. Close beside him, also in white, was the heart-stoppingly beautiful twenty-six-year-old Luise Rainer. ‘Albert Einstein,’ she said, ‘was a very nice man.’
